Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguarensis)
This delicious coffee alternative is jam-packed with antioxidants familiar to the South American aborigines who began drinking this "tea" hundreds of years ago. There is almost as much caffeine per cup as traditional coffee. Yerba Mate is made from the dried leaves of Ilex paraguarensis, an evegreen relative of the holly tree. It loves being near water, indicative of its healing properties. Traditionally, it's enjoyed in a hollowed-out gourd, which is a ritual all in itself.
