Wild Lettuce (Lactuca virosa)
You frenzied forager, don’t get overexcited and fill your salad bowl up with wild lettuce by accident, will you? You’re in for a bittersweet treat, if so. Actually, nix the sweet. Wild lettuce has NO shame about banishing her bitterness, because she knows that the more bitter, the more better. In the bitterness is where the medicine lies. And when it comes to wild lettuce, the hub of all things bitter is in her sap, a milky white latex which pours from her leaves when she is ready to be harvested.
As for the dirt on why, how, and when to use this herb, it’s up to you to hit the books / browsers and do a little sleuthing of your own. We’ll be here for you if you need a hand – or an herb – to hold.
