Elderberries (Sambucus nigra)
Aretha Franklin knew something about the elder tree, and elder trees know something about respect. The very way they carry themselves, just tall enough to taste the sun and gracefully arch their soft arms of branches only to flower and fruit umbels at perfect height for berry-picking, points to their position in the plant-people hierarchy as wizened ancestors. It is no wonder that there are entire fairy kingdoms said to live within elders…for aren’t the fairies supposed to be some of the wisest among us, too?
