Robert Tisserand, a well-respected aromatherapist, states, “Carrot seed essential oil is useless as a sunscreen.” This may be true, however the carrot seed oil is still great for the skin and great for damaged skin and free radical scavenging all of which can care for the skin when exposed to the sun. The internet also is spreading information that carrot seed essential oil contains beta-carotene when in fact it contains no beta-carotene.
The essential oil comes from the root of an inedible carrot different then the common carrot which is bought at grocery stores which contains beta-carotene.
Carrot seed is a plant which grows throughout the world, however, many prefer the quality of the French carrot seed oil. The essential oil is created by harvesting the roots then using a steam distillation process to separate the essential oil. The essential oil is amber to orange brown in color and is viscous compared to many essential oils. The odor of this beautiful oil is potent and should be used sparingly in blends to avoid it overpowering the nuanced aromas. Chemically it is high in an alcohol called carotol as well as a monoterpene known as a-pinene. These compounds give the essential oil much of its distinctive scent and work in synergy with over 100 other compounds contained with-in the oil to produce their beneficial effects.
In Ayurveda Carrot Seed is good for grounding excess vata. It also can reduce excess pitta when found in the skin (bhrajaka pitta) as is the case with eczema, psoriasis, acne and damaged skin.
